Zoned mitre (Mitra zonata)
This gastropod has spindle-shaped shell and can grow up to 10 cm in length.
It lives on the firm and detritus bottom, 3 nautical miles away from shore.
It occurs on depth from 20 to 85 m. Their biology is not well known at all.
Mitra zonata is Mediterranean endemic species, sporadically spread along the
eastern Adriatic cost from Cavtat to Rovinj. The most numerous findings are
in the Middle Adriatic.
There is a great demand for them due to their scares number and beauty of
shells. That is why there are less and less of them every day. Since 1994,
zoned mitra has been legally protected. Collecting, poaching and trafficking
is extremely forbidden (Environmental Protection Act NN 30/94).
According to the regulation on damage compensation caused by illegal
activity on protected animal species (NN 84/94), the fine for killing one
individual Mitra zonata comes to 8 000 Kn.
Giant tun (Tonna galea)
Giant tun lives
individually or occasionally in small communities on the sandy or muddy
bottom, down from 10 to 150 m. As by named, its shell is barrel-shaped,
pretty large and relatively fragile.
They can grow up to 30 cm in length what makes Tonna galea one of the
biggest gastropods in the Adriatic Sea. They pray on echinoderms and other
molluscs what turns them to be significant predator of ecosystems they
inhabit. 4% sulphuric acid is being extracted from salivary glands in order
to dissolve prey’s shell.
Giant tun is wide-spread in Indo-Pacific, east Atlantic, whole Mediterranean
and Adriatic Sea. In the Adriatic Sea, they inhabit littoral area up to 5
nautical miles from the shore. In the same time, they are very rare in the
northern part of the Adriatic. The biggest registered habitats are in the
Middle Dalmatian canals, bays and gulfs.
Because of their attractive appearance and proportion, they are often being
poached and sold as souvenirs. Therefore, their population diminishes by the
day. Since the year 1994, Tonna galea has been strictly protected by law.
Collecting, poaching and trading is extremely forbidden (Environmental
Protection Act NN 30/94)According to the regulation on damage compensation
caused by illegal activity on protected animal species (NN 84/94), the fine
for killing one individual Tonna galea comes to 1 000,00 Kn.
Variegated triton (Charonia tritonis seguenza)
Variegated
triton (triton shell) is the largest Adriatic gastropod. It has massive
spindle-shaped shell and can grow up to 40 cm in length. It occurs on rocky
bottom, on the foot of abrupt cliffs and inhabits areas rich with algae
covering and a great number of sea stars that are their primary food.
Charonia tritonis seguenza is Mediterranean gastropod, wide-spread all over
the Adriatic Sea, but in very small numbers. Most of the known localities,
where this species can be found, are situated in Dubrovnik and middle
Dalmatian islands equatorial as Hvar, Vis and Sušac.
Due to their rarity and variegation of shell, they are extremely demanded.
The triton shell has been protected by the law due to rapid decrease in
their number. Collecting, poaching and trafficking is extremely forbidden
(Environmental Protection Act NN 30/94).
According to the regulation on damage compensation caused by illegal
activity on protected animal species (NN 84/94), the fine for killing one
individual Charonia tritonis seguenza comes to 4 000,00 Kn. |
