ARGONAUTA

In times of daily horror messages regarding destruction of our environment, divers certainly ask if there is anybody in Murter area who is interested in protecting the beauty of the archipelago. Despite the fact, that Croatia in the last 12 years has passed some often very turbulent political times, the nature shows no evident traces from it. Building next to the shore is practically everywhere forbidden and there is a strong regulation (also in touristy regions) giving free access to the first six meters from the water. Especially the young are very committed in environmental protection and this increasing awareness reflects in establishment of several new environmental organizations. As an example we want to introduce you ARGONAUTA, with whom we already have made many joint projects.
Eco association Argonauta was established in February 2005.
The organization is located on a hill in the old part of Murter, where the Municipality has given a romantic house for its disposal. A walk to the old town is definitely worth while and at the same time one can drop by and visit an exhibition or other public event organized by Argonauta.
It started with the classical underwater cleaning. In autumn 2007 Martina managed to activate more than 40 divers for collecting and properly disposing of trash carelessly thrown into the water.
Mai
n goals of the establishment of Argonauta are nature and environment protection through information, education and promotion of sustainable development. „Let the blue stay blue”, “Sea is life I and II”, “Kornati – school in nature I” were successful events mainly organized for the youth. Together with Kornati National Park Argonauta organized an international symposium with the theme “Anchoring in protected marine area”.
„Increased Biodiversity and Coastal Conservation in Croatia's Kornati Archipelago” and “Sustainable Island and Coastal Development in Šibenik-Knin” are two projects carried out together with the university of Wageningen (Holland) and financed by the Dutch Government.
We wish Martina and her team a lot of success – also in our interest, because divers will visit Murter only as long as we make sure that the “blue stays blue”! We look forward to the next joint project to sustain the beauty of the Mediterranean flora and fauna.
