MURTER - a gateway to Kornati
The 19 km² sized island Murter, is connected to the mainland via a small bridge in the Murter-channel in Tisno. Its mainland connection, well equipped marinas, excellent beaches and its close location to Kornati National Park, make Murter a very attractive tourist resort in the season. Around Murter you find many small islands, bays and beaches. The isand has soft hills, the summit, the mountain Raduc reaches 127 m. You should not miss to climb the Raduc, because the view it offers is excellent: from here you see down to Murter and all the islands that reach far into the horizon. Another highlight is Sv. Rok, the oold church above the village Murter. From here it is very romantic to follow the sunset. Murter is the turistic center and main village of the island, additional there is 3 further villages: Jezera, Betina and Tisno - all of them also touristic resorts. Around the island you have many small bays and beaches, Slanica bay is the most beautiful one, located near the village Murter. In Murter you also find excellent conditions for sports and recreation. Most of the shops, cafes and restaurants are also here. During summer you find many happenings in Murter: sailing regatta, sports championships, city festivals and traditional feasts. One can prove, that the Illyrians were settlers of Muter: the remainings of the Illyrian settlement Collentum can be seen in Betina. The island Srimac was found in the middle ages, also the oldest villages Veliko Selo (Murter) and Jezeranica were created at that time. Air temperature in Dalmatia is in the summer between 27 and 33 degrees Celcius and the water temperature is in the beginning of October still about 25 degrees.
